Grandma - Sept. 8, 1941

Dear Ted,

Hello again! Am I prompt enough? I really didn't expect a letter so soon after your card but you may be sure I was most delighted to get it. And I really do appreciate it all the more since it was written after such a strenuous day.
I was sorry to hear about the conditions you found at Allegan but I'm sure everything will straighten out before so very long. I'm talking about your living quarters of course. I'm sure you'll find other things quite fine. I thought about you this morning in church when I thought you might be preaching and I sent up an extra little prayer for you. So you see, I always try to comply with requests – at least, reasonable ones.
I hope you have had as pleasant a day as we have had. Adyllis's country girlfriend has been here all day and guess where we took her this afternoon? To the tower and Wright Bros. Memorial. Ever been there? They all enjoyed it very much. I did too of course, even though it was “old stuff” to me. Then we drove around by Xenia and stopped at my grandmother's. Now we're home and waiting for supper. I mean I'm waiting, the others are preparing it. I'm not really trying to slack on the job, I want to get this written before church so I can mail it sooner.
By the way – do you know how many steps we climbed at the tower the other day? 102, no less! Mary Evelyn counted them today. Wouldn't you know she would do something like that?
Mother wants me to thank you ever so much for your birthday card. It was awfully sweet of you to remember her.
Ted, have you been taking as much teasing, etc. as I have? If so, you have my deepest sympathy and understanding. News certainly travels swiftly, doesn't it? I think I can take it pretty well though and I'm sure you can. Our preacher was at the Mayfield's on Wednesday afternoon of this week. (They were in Michigan on their vacation.) He told me this morning that he heard a little something but hasn't said what – as yet. It just goes to show you, doesn't it?
The candy you gave me is delicious. The whole family can vouch for that statement too by the way. Of course I don't want to be selfish with it. I'm glad they enjoy it. I really should have opened it when you were here so you would know how really good it is. Will you forgive me for being so thoughtless?
The pictures I took turned out pretty good. However, the ones of the Wright Bros. Memorial were not so hot. I don't know if it was the camera, the film, the kind of day, or me, but you can't tell where that light colored memorial ends and sky begins. I'll have to try it again some time. The other pictures are pretty good. I have several good ones of you.
Say, before I forget. Mary E. can't figure out how your Chevrolet was able to take all those hills and curves over by the tower and Patterson Memorial. Mean, isn't she? Maybe you can explain it to her some day.
Well, Ted, I really must get ready church. We have young people's meeting tonight too. We've only been having it every other Sunday this summer.
I'm still waiting patiently (??) for the 29th. 3 more weeks ----- Oh dear.

Love,
Dolores
